Garish Gal How To: Ikea Shelving Hack

Hi Garish Gals-

It has been a LONG time since I last blogged. Truth be told, I was lacking Inspiration. However, the GARISH GAL BLOG IS BACK.  Not only are we giving you fashion, but also outfit inspo, home decor, DIY projects, and fun recipes!

For the first post back, I am sharing a DIY Ikea hack that I recently completed! Hopefully you find it as easy & fun as I did!

Inspo:

This is from the offices at LikeToKNOW.it that they had featured on their instaStories. SERIOUSLY OBSESSED! Their offices are PERFECT.

I started with the Hyllis Ikea Shelf unit (seriously, it’s only $14.99!!). Gang, this thing is BRUTAL looking when you pull it out, but don’t worry we are about to make it CUTE.

Step 1–

I took out all the pieces and laid them on cardboard on my garage floor. I started spraying them with this Metallic Gold Spray paint that I purchased at Menards. I also used this incredible thing to avoid ruining my Mani with spray paint!

I sprayed every square inch the give you! I knew I would be covering the shelve tops with contact paper, but I sprayed them anyway. I used 1.5 cans of the gold spray paint and each received 2 coats!

I had read a tutorial where the gal had assembled first and then sprayed everything. However, I wanted to make sure I coated everything the best I could. I took some cardboard and my drill to drill the screws into a piece of cardboard. Thats how I sprayed them! Super Easy!

Once I was done, I used the drill to back out the screws! Easy peasy!

After I was done I brought the shelves inside my house before the next step. Again, I didn’t really care about the tops so you can see there are some paint blemishes.

sprayed shelves gold

Step 2–

CONTACT PAPER!! I have actually used this stuff in the fashion truck, so I had some left over and then ordered another roll of it. I would say 2 rolls would be sufficient. I had some left over in the end. I also used a box cutter (and exact-o knife would have been amazing, but I couldn’t find mine).

I laid the paper down and then put the shelf on top and cut like I would if I was wrapping a present! Once I had cut the outline, I flipped the shelf over, left about 1 in for the end, and then started slowly sticking the paper to the shelf. You MUST go slow (I know it’s hard, I’m not patient either) in order to push out all the air bubbles. I just used my pinky, but you can also purchase a tool if you feel so inclined. My pinky worked great!

shelf one done marble

I cut out the overage on the corners so there wouldn’t be funky overhang. Sometimes the contact paper doesn’t want to stick, if that happens to you, then I suggest using either hot glue, or E6000 glue to seal it down!

marble contact paper added to shelves

Step 3–

Start assembling!! Follow the directions from the Ikea box–they aren’t as bad as everyone says!! Also, I poked little holes in the contact paper so you can easily see where the screws need to go in!

assembled

Once you have assembled, it’s time to start STYLING!!

Here’s a full view of my office! I am living for Mid Century Modern styling, so this fit PERFECTLY with my decor.

Top 5 Things They Don’t Tell You About Starting a Business

D80_8775.jpg

Garish Gal has officially been in business 3 YEARS! I can’t tell you how exciting, but also shocking that is! It certainly does not feel like it has been three years, but I am excited to see where the next few years take GG.

I get asked a lot about what it is like to start a business. Everyone wants to know what the journey is like, but few actually want to put in the work it takes to do so. I thought I would put together a list of things that no one really talks about. I feel like everyone wants starting a business to sound like it is all roses and immediate success, but that isn’t always what it actually is. So here are the Top 5 Things They Don’t Tell You About Starting A Business!

1. You will Lose Sleep

Every time I get charged for a shipment, I have a mini panic attack. I worry if the customers will like the new merchandise and I worry if it will sell. There are many nights you can’t sleep because your mind is so focused on the business. There will be mornings (and I am NOT a morning person) that you wake up at 4am thinking about something you should be doing for the business instead of sleeping. Learn to shut it off. It took me a long time to learn this. If I am being honest, I am still learning. I could worry myself to death with all the things that need to get done, but I know that I have to carve out time for myself. So I make a list of the things I need to do by the end of the day, once those are completed I move the rest to tomorrow’s list. Don’t let it consume you and find an outlet to relieve the stress and pressure!

2. It’s Okay to Delegate

It is okay to be bad at certain things within your business. I think when we start a business we think we have to do it all to save money. I learned the hard way that in the long run I was hurting sales because I was trying to do things I don’t do well on my own. We all have weaknesses, but we all also have strengths. When we recognize where we are weak, we also recognize where we are strong. Hire the photographer, hire the accountant, hire the social media person, hire someone for your weaknesses so that you can build your strengths. Your business will thrive much better when you focus on what you are good at and hire others where you are weak. We can’t do it all and we don’t have to.

3. You will Sacrifice A LOT

People tend to think that if you own a small business you have a ton of money and you are making a ton of money. This could be farther from the truth. If you took all the hours you spent working on your small business, you would be the most underpaid person in the world. You have to sacrifice time–be it with family, friends, or from something you want to do. But all the sacrifice is totally worth it. The minute someone comes in and buys something they LOVE, it makes every sleepless night and all the long hours seem like nothing. It drives you through the times when you have to miss that party you really wanted to go to, or the concert everyone is at but you.

Sidenote–I am not saying you should sacrifice relationships for your business. Success is incredible, but we were build for relationship. There is nothing more lonely than achieving success and having no one to celebrate it with. That doesn’t just mean partner, but friends and family as well! When you are surrounded by good people, your success actually increases. So make sure your tribe is one that uplifts and supports your dream!

4. It takes HARD WORK

As a millennial, I constantly hear how we are notorious for not being hard workers. Owning a business will throw that out the door. I grew up surrounded by hard workers–my parents and my grandparents taught us to work our tails off. I am so grateful for that because I see SO many people think they can start a successful business by doing the bare minimum. I see business after business fold because people don’t want to put in the work. The old adage you get out of it what you put into it holds true. It takes a lot of work to make a business thrive and there will be times when you don’t want to do the work. When that happens I promise you will immediately see the consequence of that laziness. So prove them wrong–show them that as a millennial you can work hard and drive a successful business. Otherwise, you are just wasting time and money!

5. It will be the Most Rewarding thing You Do

There is no better feeling than seeing my business have successes. I don’t like to say Garish Gal is successful, I like to say she has successes. Every day is different and every day is a challenge. There will be failures, or as I like to call them lessons learned. Don’t let them keep you from going after your dream. I remember before I started GG I told a boy I liked that I was starting a business. His response was “really are you smart enough and do you have enough money for that?” It almost stopped me from starting GG altogether. I remember thinking he was so right I am not smart enough, after all I was only 22. I had started reading a book by Brene Brown and she made some statements that stopped me in my tracks.

“I want to be in the arena. I want to be brave with my life. And when we make the choice to dare greatly, we sign up to get our asses kicked. We can choose courage or we can choose comfort, but we can’t have both. Not at the same time.

Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it’s having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome. Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage.

A lot of cheap seats in the arena are filled with people who never venture onto the floor. They just hurl mean-spirited criticisms and put-downs from a safe distance. The problem is, when we stop caring what people think and stop feeling hurt by cruelty, we lose our ability to connect. But when we’re defined by what people think, we lose the courage to be vulnerable. Therefore, we need to be selective about the feedback we let into our lives. For me, if you’re not in the arena getting your ass kicked, I’m not interested in your feedback.” (Brown, 2012)

So I started Garish gal knowing that I might not have enough money (that’s what SBA loans are for) and that I might not be smart enough, but I had to get in the arena and try. I get to learn new things when I encounter something I am “not smart enough” for, and get to grow and stretch into a better business woman daily. Get in the arena, it will be the most rewarding thing you have ever done.

#MomPicks by Garish Momma

My Mom wears Garish Gal almost every single day. Sometimes she will open Garish Gal shipments for me and take what she wants! The worst part is she forgets to tell me! Don’t worry, I eventually catch her and make her pay just like everyone else!

My Mom is my best friend and inspiration. She has shattered the glass ceiling time and time again. She has been my business sounding board. She even opens and hangs up Garish Gal shipments when she knows I am overwhelmed. She is a strong bad ass boss lady and I am fortunate she has raised me with the confidence to be the same. But she is more than just a boss lady, she also been there for every break up, every failure, every fight, and every single time I have needed her. Even 2am sobbing phone calls, or angered rants where I just word vomit endlessly. I honestly don’t know what I would do without her.

So it only seemed fitting that I let her tell you what she wants for Mother’s Day, because after all it is her day and who knows what a mom wants better than my mom! Without further ado, Gals Meet my Momma Carol Talbert!

As Mother’s Day approaches, Maggie asked me to share my favorite pieces available at Garish Gal.  I have several favorite spring pieces that I love and I have my eye on…  Many times the clothes arrive when Maggie is traveling so I get to open the new arrivals and put them on hangers for her.  Some of my favs never make it to the Boutique.   I snatch up my size right away and tell her that her shipment was short one size large in that item.  She then kindly bills me for the missing item!  Others of my favorites I watch closely to see if they are purchased or not.  I like to give them 2 – 3 weeks and if no one has purchased my size, then it is fair game for me to purchase!

My most recent favorite is one I have been waiting on since she posted it when she was at market to place her orders.  I love this jacket!  It fits perfect.  It works great for rainy and/or spring chilly days like we have had this week.  This jacket came in earlier this past week when Maggie was traveling.  I grabbed my size and wore it the next day!  It will transition perfectly to early summer cool mornings and nights with the shoulder and side venting.  There are several new items that are my favs from the shipments last week that are only available currently in the Garish Gal Mobile Boutique.  (Look for the Galaxy Girl Long Sleeve Flowered top- you will love it!)**This top will launch on the website NEXT Tuesday!**

Screen Shot 2017-05-08 at 2.59.59 PM.png

Of course, I always love the Kimonos that Garish Gal carries.  I have my eye on a new black Kimono in stock… (I already have a green one that I wear year round.)   I also have my eye on the BB Dakota Butler Cozi Cardi and the BB Dakota Lamour Fringe Cardigan.   These are always great pieces to help transition any outfit from day to night.

D80_3362.jpg

D80_3444.jpg

D80_3402.jpg

I don’t wear dresses very often but Garish Gal has talked me into the Summer nights BB Dakota Beah printed Maxi Dress.   It is both flowing and flattering.  I have plenty of wedding and summer events this year, so I need more pieces like this in my closet.

D80_3554.jpg

I am hooked on the Black Spanx Leggins!   They are AMAZING. ** These will be back in stock for the Fall!**

For day to day wear, I have so many favorite blouses from Garish Gal.  My two current favs are the BB Dakota Brando Printed Blouse and the Lace Long Sleeve white Tunic.  The tanks available at Garish Gal are endless!  I love the Chambray Ruffle Tank and the Ash Tunic Tank!  Garish Gal has a Navy Cute Cropped Blouse that transcends Spring into Summer!  I love it with hot pink earrings!

D80_3388.jpg

I can’t forget jewelry too!  I have the black Arrowhead necklace and the Arrowhead bangle.  I wear the Grey Stud Earrings almost every day.    My favorite LipSense Glossy Gloss is Heartbreaker!

D80_3468.jpg

Garish Gal’s grandmother proudly wears several pieces from the Boutique.  Her favs are always jackets-  BB Dakota Carnation Black Pleather; BB Dakota Yohan Light Grey Jacket; and the Lush Olive Green Zipper Jacket.    She even wears the BB Dakota Leggings!

D80_3423.jpg

How do I say this politically correct…, you don’t have to be under 35 years old to enjoy shopping and wearing items from Garish Gal!   Garish Gal has items that Maggie wears but are also still appropriate for me or her grandma to wear.  It is all in what you pair it with and how you carry it off.    Remember, the inspiration for Garish Gal, Great, Great Aunt Rosemary, lived well into her 80’s.  She never got too old to always have a flair of Garish in her closet to set her outfit apart!

If you are not sure how to wear an item or what to pair it with, ask Garish Gal!  She will be very helpful and honest with you on how to dress for your style!

I am extremely proud of my Garish Gal, Maggie, and her drive for success.   Her brand is selling “Fashion with a Future” through donating a percent of the proceeds from her sales to benefit 501 organizations supporting the education for young women.   I know my purchases not only support Garish Gal but I am also aiding organizations that help provide education to a young girl that may not otherwise have that opportunity.

So this year, ask for Garish Gal for Mother’s Day!  You will not only be rocking a great look but you will also be giving back to help a young girl learn to read and write!   Happy Mother’s Day to you and to the women in your life!  Celebrate them with love!

All my love to you my sweet Baby Girl and Beautiful young woman!  I will always love you to the moon and back!     Keep following your dream and passion!    Garish Mom

Easter Sunday Outfits

EASTER HAS FULL ON SNUCK UP ON ME THIS YEAR.

I hope I am not the only one who feels like this. One of the best memories I had growing up was going with my mom and sister to pick out our Easter dresses! We would always receive flowers from our grandparents that we would wear all through church. We would all get pictures with the grandparents before church with our fancy outfits. The memories are still SO special to me! With that being said, IT’S TIME for the perfect Easter Outfits!

For Easter Sunday, I LOVE a good sundress. SO below are some options that I felt were REALLY cute for the day that Love Won.

Not one you love? Check out the Dresses Tab for more options!

My great grandma used to say, “If it rains on Easter Sunday, it will rain for the next 7 Sundays.” Indiana and April in general means RAIN, but every time it has rained on Easter Sunday, it has rained the next 7. Even on days as clear as can be, there would be a random rain sprinkle. You better believe I will be looking out again this year!

Books to Bring to the Beach

unspecified-1.jpeg

For some of our shoppers, Spring Break time is upon us! While I am not going on any Spring Break trips (sigh) I always love when I see posts about books people have read and LOVED.

I took my own little vacation earlier this year to Florida. All I packed in my suitcase: books & bikinis. I am an introvert and LOVE my alone time. So I packed my bag full of books and bikinis and headed to the beach. I couldn’t have asked for a better combination.

Here are some of my favorite recent reads that you can take with you to the beach, or just a comfy spot on the couch if you are having a staycation!

Unknown.jpeg

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

I loved this thriller! She definitely keeps you guessing to the end. There are twists and turns at every corner. I read a lot of books like this and ended up figuring it out about midway through. There were a few surprises that I didn’t see coming! This one is for sure a must read–you literally feel every range of emotion!

Unknown-1.jpeg

In a Dark, Dark Woods by Ruth Ware

I LOVED this book. It starts out a little slow, but then has you FREAKING out the entire rest of the book. It was one of those you were REALLY trying to figure out what was going on because it was SO messed up. I could not put this book down, once it got going, it was a crazy rollercoaster! Great fast and suspenseful read!

Unknown-2.jpeg

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

This was hands down my favorite that I have read in a while. I was actually so scared at one point, I had to stop reading! The suspense and story line was SO intense. You had NO idea what was going to happen next, who was good or bad, or if the main character was even alive!! This is a must read and one your really need to read in one setting. This Book Binge is better than a Netflix binge, I promise!

51VG7zt42UL._SX326_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda

This one really threw me! I usually can predict what is going to happen in suspense thrillers, but I totally didn’t see this ending coming, which made it even more fun to read. This one really messes with your head. It travels backwards through the plot line leaving you trying to figure out what will happen next. I can’t say I loved how it ended, but it was for sure an interesting read.

Unknown-3.jpeg

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

As someone who literally watches Investigation Discovery channel EVERY SINGLE DAY, loves history, and listens nonstop to true crime podcasts, this was a great real life tale of the man considered to be America’s First Serial Killer. The fact that he killed SO many people and was able to get away with it still blows my mind. I also love the mix of building the city up while another person was breaking the city down. It also follows the architects that worked extremely hard to build up Chicago in time for the World’s fair, meanwhile H H Holmes is using the World’s Fair to murder people! My sister lives in Chicago and I had never heard of H H Holmes until I read this! It is a slower read, but truly fascinating.

For the #BossBabes….

Do the KIND thing by Danial Lubetzky

I loved reading this book. It was a great read if you have your own business, want to have your own, or looking to pursue your passion. Garish Gal is a socially responsible company as we donate 10% of profits to education based nonprofit organizations (mainly Project 117 in Haiti). The whole idea of KIND as a company is AND meaning that you can sell something great AND have a socially responsible mission. He talks a lot about how to create a successful business after failure, which I think all business owners need to read about!

Look cute while posted up with a good book —>

This black distressed tunic is a boutique fave! Only a few sizes left, so make sure you get yours ASAP!

Summer Salsa

IF you are like me, you have an undying love for Summer & Mexican food!! I literally never tire of eating chips and salsa, guac, & tacos!! So when I recently attended a friend’s party & fell in love with her salsa, I insisted on having the recipe. Since then I have made it twice and it has been a hit each time! An added benefit–it is actually not so bad for you! I made mine with all organic ingredients (except for 3 ingredients)!

So spice up your Summer & 4th Of July Parties with this Confetti Salsa!

What you Need:

  • 1 Red Bell Pepper
  • 1 Orange Bell Pepper
  • 1 Yellow Bell Pepper
  • 1 Green Bell Pepper
  • 4 Stalks of celeby
  • 2-3 Jalapeño Peppers
    • Clean and Chop up the above ingredients! Fair warning: If you dice them all up by hand it takes FOREVER! This last time I used a food chopper and it was AWESOME! It saved me SO much time!
  • 1 can of Pinto Beans
  • 1 can of Black Eyed Peas
  • 1 can of White Corn
    • Drain & Rinse the above canned ingredients. Combine in a large bowl with the first set of ingredients.
  • 1 cup of Vegetable Oil
  • 1/2 cup Cider Vinegar
    • Bring these two ingredients to a boil. Once boiling, add 1/2 cup of white sugar and stir until dissolved! Pour over all ingredients & chill. Drain before serving!

I hope you enjoy this Summer Salsa as much as I do! Let me know how yours turns out!

AND Happy Fourth of July!

Mother’s Day Must Haves

Mother’s Day is RIGHT around the corner & it’s time to find the perfect present for our “No I don’t need anything” mothers!

Let me tell you about my momma!

12924612_10205848762156072_7953476997041383156_n.jpg

She’s my best friend, my twin, my biggest supporter, and my sounding board. She is a strong leader and extremely driven. Whenever I need advice about Garish Gal, she is the first person I call. Her faith is silent and strong, which I love. Her job takes her out of the country quiet a bit and it has made me realize JUST how much I lean on her! She somehow always finds a way to skip sleep and calm my fears even when she’s half way across the globe! She is humble and an introvert–so she’s going to HATE that I posted about her! Needless to say, she is everything I hope to be someday.

I’ve been blessed to have multiple STRONG women in my life. The older I get, the more I realize how lucky I am to be surrounded by such amazing, talented, & loving women.

My mom is the HARDEST person to shop for because if she wants something she purchases it herself! It drives me nuts. Fortunately for me, she wears A LOT of Garish Gal, so I have a few ideas in mind for this years!

Hopefully this guide will help you make your gift giving seamless & easy!

  1. Gift Card– This is the EASIEST gift. Gift your mom a Garish Gal eGift Card by going online and purchasing one! It’s literally that easy. This one is great for dads & sons–the mothers in your life will love it!
  2. Cocoon Cardigan– This is a great gift because it is very easy to wear! Wear to work, over a Summer dress, or with a tank & jeans for a casual look! This cardigan is super versatile and can be worn all year long!

Screen Shot 2016-04-21 at 3.32.34 PM.png

3. Chevron Fair Trade Necklace– This is the best selling item for Garish Gal. My own mom has it in both colors and wears them at least twice a week! I even steal her gold one from time to time! This necklace is made by female artisans at a fair trade co-op in India! What an awesome way to celebrate women!

Screen Shot 2016-04-21 at 3.37.29 PM.png

Screen Shot 2016-04-21 at 3.37.58 PM.png

4. Classic Cool Cuff– This is a fun option. Your mom already has the above necklaces in both colors, so check out these really cool (fair trade) adjustable cuffs! These are great because they fit wrists of all sizes!

5. Small-Town Indiana Love– Most of my readers are from Indiana like me! I love this small town Indiana shirt specially after tragedy hit my small town a month ago & I was reminded of just how much I really do LOVE my small Indiana town.  This top is the perfect way to show your small town pride! **These are locally made in Kokomo,Indiana!

Derby Looks To Love

Being in the Midwest, the Kentucky Derby is a HUGE event! I went last year for the first time and had an absolute blast! Needless to say, I will be going back again this year! The hardest part is coming up with a cute, fun, and unique outfit to wear with a matching hat!

Here are some great looks to love  +  fun hats that can complete your ensemble!

Here is my look from last year <3…the Mint Julep & Oaks Lily signature Derby drinks are a must have! (If you are of age!!)

My dress was Clover Canyon that my mom had surprised me with a year earlier. I loveeeeed this dress! So comfortable, beautiful colors, and perfect for Spring at the Derby!

One of my best friends (and her husband) helped me make my fascinator! I had a specific example I wanted to emulate, but couldn’t find it to purchase. My friend convinced me that we could easily make it and I must say we did a good job! It was HUGE and kept falling off my small head, but it fit in at the Derby.

I decided to wear sandals because I knew I would be walking around and socializing more than sitting! We started our day at 7am and it didn’t end until around 10pm! I must say wearing sandals was honestly the best choice I made! Some girls that rocked heels were dying by midday!

unnamed.jpg

I went with some of my girls I played college golf with! It was a blast reuniting away from the golf course and getting dressed up together!

If you don’t get to go, here are some fun Kentucky Derby Party ideas!

Shop Garish Gal for super fun Kentucky Derby looks!

All of the dresses above are on sale! 😉
