My Mom wears Garish Gal almost every single day. Sometimes she will open Garish Gal shipments for me and take what she wants! The worst part is she forgets to tell me! Don’t worry, I eventually catch her and make her pay just like everyone else!

My Mom is my best friend and inspiration. She has shattered the glass ceiling time and time again. She has been my business sounding board. She even opens and hangs up Garish Gal shipments when she knows I am overwhelmed. She is a strong bad ass boss lady and I am fortunate she has raised me with the confidence to be the same. But she is more than just a boss lady, she also been there for every break up, every failure, every fight, and every single time I have needed her. Even 2am sobbing phone calls, or angered rants where I just word vomit endlessly. I honestly don’t know what I would do without her.

So it only seemed fitting that I let her tell you what she wants for Mother’s Day, because after all it is her day and who knows what a mom wants better than my mom! Without further ado, Gals Meet my Momma Carol Talbert!

As Mother’s Day approaches, Maggie asked me to share my favorite pieces available at Garish Gal. I have several favorite spring pieces that I love and I have my eye on… Many times the clothes arrive when Maggie is traveling so I get to open the new arrivals and put them on hangers for her. Some of my favs never make it to the Boutique. I snatch up my size right away and tell her that her shipment was short one size large in that item. She then kindly bills me for the missing item! Others of my favorites I watch closely to see if they are purchased or not. I like to give them 2 – 3 weeks and if no one has purchased my size, then it is fair game for me to purchase!

My most recent favorite is one I have been waiting on since she posted it when she was at market to place her orders. I love this jacket! It fits perfect. It works great for rainy and/or spring chilly days like we have had this week. This jacket came in earlier this past week when Maggie was traveling. I grabbed my size and wore it the next day! It will transition perfectly to early summer cool mornings and nights with the shoulder and side venting. There are several new items that are my favs from the shipments last week that are only available currently in the Garish Gal Mobile Boutique. Of course, I always love the Kimonos that Garish Gal carries. I have my eye on a new black Kimono in stock… (I already have a green one that I wear year round.) I also have my eye on the BB Dakota Butler Cozi Cardi and the BB Dakota Lamour Fringe Cardigan. These are always great pieces to help transition any outfit from day to night.

I don’t wear dresses very often but Garish Gal has talked me into the Summer nights BB Dakota Beah printed Maxi Dress. It is both flowing and flattering. I have plenty of wedding and summer events this year, so I need more pieces like this in my closet.

I am hooked on the Black Spanx Leggins! They are AMAZING. ** These will be back in stock for the Fall!**

For day to day wear, I have so many favorite blouses from Garish Gal. My two current favs are the BB Dakota Brando Printed Blouse and the Lace Long Sleeve white Tunic. The tanks available at Garish Gal are endless! I love the Chambray Ruffle Tank and the Ash Tunic Tank! Garish Gal has a Navy Cute Cropped Blouse that transcends Spring into Summer! I love it with hot pink earrings!

I can’t forget jewelry too! I have the black Arrowhead necklace and the Arrowhead bangle. I wear the Grey Stud Earrings almost every day. My favorite LipSense Glossy Gloss is Heartbreaker!

Garish Gal’s grandmother proudly wears several pieces from the Boutique. Her favs are always jackets- BB Dakota Carnation Black Pleather; BB Dakota Yohan Light Grey Jacket; and the Lush Olive Green Zipper Jacket. She even wears the BB Dakota Leggings!

How do I say this politically correct…, you don’t have to be under 35 years old to enjoy shopping and wearing items from Garish Gal! Garish Gal has items that Maggie wears but are also still appropriate for me or her grandma to wear. It is all in what you pair it with and how you carry it off. Remember, the inspiration for Garish Gal, Great, Great Aunt Rosemary, lived well into her 80’s. She never got too old to always have a flair of Garish in her closet to set her outfit apart!

Have you heard about this incredible LipSense Lip Gloss?? Seriously- I am ALWAYS skeptical of direct sales products, but LipSense is all that is promises and MORE! I LOVE to play around with lip glosses and I’ve tried everything from Kylie Jenner LipKits to NYX Soft Butter Mattes. I will say–NOTHING has impressed me like LipSense.

I personally don’t wear much make up, it is a rare event if I even wear eyeshadow. Lip glosses have become an easy way to add a little extra to my look without extra time. However, I would get SO self conscious every time I put them on. Is it smeared? Is it on my teeth? Does it still look okay? Ugh, I hope my date doesn’t notice my lips have come off on my wine glass. I would get SO frustrated that I would usually go to the bathroom and take it off shortly after putting it on. I also had a boyfriend that refused to kiss me if I was wearing lip gloss!

With LipSense all of those problems are fixed! Here’s everything you NEED to know about LipSense:

What is LipSense?

I recently learned that my ever present need more than life support chapstik was actually hurting my lips. Wax in the chapstik blocks your lips from naturally moisturizing themselves because it acts as a moisture barrier- thus making you dependent on chapstik. OF COURSE-DUH MAGGIE–Business 101 make the customer NEED your product. Instead, you should use products with Shea Butter in them to help your lips naturally moisturize. The LipSense Glosses are made with Shea allowing for your lip to stay hydrated so your lips won’t get that dried out crusty looks.

Okayyyy, So How Much Does it Cost?

LipSense is super reasonable–I have spent a lot more at the Nordstrom counter, Sephora, and Ulta on less superior products. These tubes last a 4-6 months (based on daily use) and a single wear lasts anywhere from 4-18 hours (depending on how many layers you applied). Meanwhile, my KJ LipKit barely lasts an hour.

How Do I Apply it?

Clean your lips and make sure they are completely dry.
Shake your LipSense well before applying.
With lips parted, place applicator on your lip beginning at the outside corner and apply in a fluid sweeping motion to the opposite corner of the lips. Avoid touching lips until Glossy Gloss is applied.
Apply three even and thin layers, letting your color dry (10-15 seconds) in between layers.
If your lips are dry, chapped, or cracked, it may tingle when applying. The Shea Butter in the gloss will help to restore moisture and tingling should subside with regular use.

How Do I Remove it?

LipSense can be removed using anything oil based (baby oil, coconut oil, etc.) a warm washcloth, Oops SeneGence Remover, and any makeup remover towelette.

What Colors Do You Recommend?

As a lip lady, I LOVE nudes, light pinks, and mauves for every day colors. Reds and Bordeaux colors are great if you are feeling a little sassy!

I usually only purchase the colors I really love for Garish Gal (usually in the above hues). You won’t ever see us carrying a black, or brown, or something totally out there. It just isn’t true to the Garish Gal brand.

Garish Gal is TWO!!

Two years of being in business.

I would be lying through this keyboard if I said that statement doesn’t bring tears to my eyes. Owning a business is the best and hardest thing I have ever done. The sacrifices and stress seem to be endless, but then again so do the rewards.

When I started my business, I had really low self esteem. I was coming off of some major life changes and honestly didn’t know who I was or what I wanted. In the back of my head I had this aching feel that I wasn’t smart enough to do this. That I wasn’t good enough & that I was wasting my time and money.

Garish Gal has so proved me wrong in so many ways, but I think this is the most important. Not only has Garish Gal given me confidence I didn’t know possible, but it gives other women confidence. I started the business with the intention of reaching out to the outcast–that person who doesn’t necessarily mesh with what society or a small town says is acceptable. I guess I have always been that person–usually described as weird, or as I like to think, Garish.

I love when a woman comes into Garish Gal for the first time and finds something she loves, but is scared to try. There’s nothing quiet like that moment when she comes out of the fitting room and sees herself for the first time. That moment she realizes she looks great & can rock that which seemed impossible a few minutes before. She walks out of that little enclosed cargo trailer, bag in hand, with a new found confidence in her heart.

That to me, is worth everything.

I want to thank everyone who has made Garish Gal what it is today. I don’t have the capacity to thank every single person in this post, but if I could I SO would.

Summer Salsa

IF you are like me, you have an undying love for Summer & Mexican food!! I literally never tire of eating chips and salsa, guac, & tacos!! So when I recently attended a friend’s party & fell in love with her salsa, I insisted on having the recipe. Since then I have made it twice and it has been a hit each time! An added benefit–it is actually not so bad for you! I made mine with all organic ingredients (except for 3 ingredients)!

So spice up your Summer & 4th Of July Parties with this Confetti Salsa!

What you Need:

1 Red Bell Pepper
1 Orange Bell Pepper
1 Yellow Bell Pepper
1 Green Bell Pepper
4 Stalks of celeby
2-3 Jalapeño Peppers
- Clean and Chop up the above ingredients! Fair warning: If you dice them all up by hand it takes FOREVER! This last time I used a food chopper and it was AWESOME! It saved me SO much time!
1 can of Pinto Beans
1 can of Black Eyed Peas
1 can of White Corn
- Drain & Rinse the above canned ingredients. Combine in a large bowl with the first set of ingredients.
1 cup of Vegetable Oil
1/2 cup Cider Vinegar
- Bring these two ingredients to a boil. Once boiling, add 1/2 cup of white sugar and stir until dissolved! Pour over all ingredients & chill. Drain before serving!

Mother’s Day Must Haves

Mother’s Day is RIGHT around the corner & it’s time to find the perfect present for our “No I don’t need anything” mothers!

Let me tell you about my momma!

She’s my best friend, my twin, my biggest supporter, and my sounding board. She is a strong leader and extremely driven. Whenever I need advice about Garish Gal, she is the first person I call. She somehow always finds a way to skip sleep and calm my fears even when she’s half way across the globe! She is humble and an introvert–so she’s going to HATE that I posted about her! Needless to say, she is everything I hope to be someday.

I’ve been blessed to have multiple STRONG women in my life. The older I get, the more I realize how lucky I am to be surrounded by such amazing, talented, & loving women.

Derby Looks To Love

Being in the Midwest, the Kentucky Derby is a HUGE event! I went last year for the first time and had an absolute blast! Needless to say, I will be going back again this year! The hardest part is coming up with a cute, fun, and unique outfit to wear with a matching hat!

Here is my look from last year <3…the Mint Julep & Oaks Lily signature Derby drinks are a must have! (If you are of age!!)

My dress was Clover Canyon that my mom had surprised me with a year earlier. I loveeeeed this dress! So comfortable, beautiful colors, and perfect for Spring at the Derby!

One of my best friends (and her husband) helped me make my fascinator! I had a specific example I wanted to emulate, but couldn’t find it to purchase. My friend convinced me that we could easily make it and I must say we did a good job! It was HUGE and kept falling off my small head, but it fit in at the Derby.

I decided to wear sandals because I knew I would be walking around and socializing more than sitting! We started our day at 7am and it didn’t end until around 10pm! I must say wearing sandals was honestly the best choice I made! Some girls that rocked heels were dying by midday!

I went with some of my girls I played college golf with! It was a blast reuniting away from the golf course and getting dressed up together!

5 Spring Trends to Try

Thankfully, Spring is right around the corner! It’s time to test the trends and see what works best for your lifestyle! Check out the fun new trends for Spring/Summer 2016!

Pastel Plaids– I love that the plaid trend has carried over from fall! I love plaid and am obsessing over the pastel version of plaids that I am seeing. The super cute, flirty version Garish Gal has is great for Spring & Summer! This dress that is coming in May is another super fun pastel plaid!

Chambray– One of the most comfortable fabrics around, Chambray has quickly become a highly transitional trend! We saw a little of this last fall, but you will see EVEN MORE Chambray for Spring/Summer. This jacket is a perfect way to carry the trend from Spring, to chilly Summer nights, and even into Fall! I also really love the Chambray dress coming in May–it is for sure another great transitional piece!

Off the Shoulder- Whether it is done in a super cute top or a flirty dress, off the shoulder is going to be everywhere this Spring & Summer! Garish Gal has two versions in a top that has really sold amazingly! The floral version is a great way to bring pattern and color into your wardrobe, whereas, the striped version is tried and true black and white! I really love both! Garish Gal will also have an all white dress hitting the website and the truck in May! It is STUNNING & I can’t wait of you all to see it! Off the shoulder always comes off as subtly sexy to me–which is always fun 😉

Fine Lines– If you are like me, you struggle to wear stripes! So the thought of stripes being a big trend for the Spring/Summer is less than thrilling. However, I have found that smaller “fine” stripes and/or stripes that are elongating rather than around are much more flattering! Currently, GG has an amazing striped black and white blouse that is great for work or a night out! There is also a super cute Summer style coming in May that is a great way to rock this trend. This sweater with fine lines in french terry fabric is a great layering piece that I have been living in lately as well!

Pajama Dressing– Not going to lie–If I could I would wear PJs alllllll day everyday! So the idea of Pajama dressing is slinky, comfortable, yet fashionable looks! A good example of this is this super comfortable and feminine lingerie like dress that is coming in May. A current top selling dress that also embodies the sexy PJ all day look is this emerald green Embeth dress with a small cut out in the bust (The picture is the red version as I just received this piece in and haven’t posted on the site yet! It is the same color as the Nanna Dress)! If you are like me and tend to wear giant t-shirts to bed, Jolene is the perfect way to embody this trend!
